1) You will need to answer these questions:

What is the invention?

The steam engine is the invention.

Who invented it and when?

Richard Trevithick and Oliver Evans in 1803.

What problem were they trying to solve?

They are trying to sovle how to made it for a better use.

How has the invention affected your life?

This invention is affected to my life because i can use it to made a machine.

2) You will need to answer these questions:

What is the invention?

They try to made a new style of Automobile.

How has the invention affected your life?

This affect to my life bacause i can use it to run with my work. i also can drive it where i want to go.

3) You will need to answer these questions:

What is the invention?

Who invented it and when?

What problem were they trying to solve?

How has the invention affected your life?

You will create three slides in a Flowgram for this part of the project.

SECOND PART:

Think of something you would like to invent. Answer these questions:

What is its name?

What does it do?

What problem does it solve?

How will it affect people’s lives?

The Wright Brothers:

The first working airplane was invented, designed, made, and flown by the Wright brothers, Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) and Orville Wright (1871-1948). Their "Wright Flyer" was a fabric-covered biplane with a wooden frame. The power to the two propellers was supplied by a 12-horsepower water-cooled engine.

On December 17, 1903, the "Flyer" flew for 12 seconds and for a distance of 120 feet (37 m). The flight took place at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, USA.

Orville and Wilbur Wright were raised in Dayton, Ohio. Although they did not go to college, the brothers had intuitive technical ability. Before building their airplane, they had built a printing press and operated a bicycle repair and sales shop. They constructed their own bicycles. The profits from their bicycle business funded their airplane-building venture.

The brothers chose Kitty Hawk to fly their planes because it was an isolated town on North Carolina's Outer Banks that had steady winds and sand dunes on which they could glide and land gently, maximizing their safety. The brothers' first glider, tested in 1900, failed to fly. A second trial in 1901 fared better, but they went on the improve the design. Later that year, the brothers built a wind tunnel in which they tested over 200 wing and airframe designs. This resulted in a successful glider (unpowered) model (flown in 1902 at Kill Devils Hills near Kitty Hawk).

Back in Ohio, the brothers designed a 12-horsepower internal combustion engine which they planned to use to power the flight of a two-propeller plane. The machinist Charles Taylor helped them build a new plane which would use this engine.

Returning to Kitty Hawk, they began test flights in 1903. The engine stalled during a December 14 try (with Orville flying). After three days of repairs, the plane accelerated on a monorail track and flew into the air, staying up for 12 seconds; it flew 120 feet. That day, the brothers took turns flying the plane. On the last flight that day, Wilbur flew 852 feet in 59 seconds.

During the next few years, the brothers developed more sophisticated planes. They later formed the Wright Company, which built and sold their airplanes. Wilbur Wright died in 1912 of typhoid fever; Orville died in 1948.

The Wright brothers' famous airplane, the "Wright Flyer," is on permanent display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., USA.

THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUSH

                 5)THE CALIFORNIA GOLD RUS7)

On January 24, 1848, James Marshall spotted glittering flakes of gold in the American River. At the time he was working on helping to build a saw mill for John Sutter. He quickly took the gold to show Mr. Sutter and to get it tested. Sutter asked Marshall to keep the discovery of gold a secret until the construction of his mill was completed. However, that was one secret that was impossible to keep because gold is a valuable metal.

6)On May 12, 1848, when word of the discovery reached San Francisco, the town's male population was about 600. On May 15, only about 200 men remained.

1)Then on December 5, 1848, President Polk announced that gold was discovered. This announcement caused one of the largest migrations to the west coast. Over 100,000 people made their way to California. These gold seekers were known as the "forty-niners."

4)Still, many miners stayed. They started businesses in cities and towns or became farmers.. By 1856, San Francisco had more than 50,000 citizens and was the largest and most important city in the West. On its streets walked people from every corner of the world.

2)Today it might be hard to understand why men left their homes and loved ones and traveled thousands of miles to look for gold. But in 1849, a prosperous farmer might make about two or three hundred dollars a year. A factory worker made about a dollar for working a twelve hour day. A skilled craftsmen made a dollar and a half a day.

8)By June 1, San Francisco was a ghost town--stores closed, ships abandoned, and houses deserted. Most of the men had run off to the gold fields. The town's newspapers even shut down. No one was left to write or read them.

The Mexican-American War

The Mexican-American War

The Mexican-American War began in 1846.  There were many events that led up to this war.  For example, Mexico and the United States argued over where the official border between the countries should be.  The United States was also unhappy because Mexico refused to sell California and New Mexico to the United States.  People in the United States at that time wanted to make the country bigger so they wanted to buy California and New Mexico from mexico.  Mexico’s refusal to sell the territories was one of the reason the United States went to war.  Mexico had many problems throughout the war.  The biggest broblem was that the Mexican government was weak and divided.  The United States also had a better army and weapons.  After two years of fighting the American army invaded Mexico and won the war.  Mexico had to give the United States California, New Mexico, and other territories to end the war.
